We are proud to produce a light-weight and versatile
grinder or monkey organ based on the design of John Smith of England. While we have made
extensive design changes in the instrument, and are using some more contemporary materials
in our shop, the genius of the design is John's.
Specifications, subject to change:
Punched paper music roll
Direct pneumatic action
20 note compass, one rank of 4' stopped flute pipes
Hand-cranked
Leathered bellows and reservoir
Dimensions: 13-1/2 deep" x 17" high x 16" wide
Weight: 18 pounds
Superior materials for lasting value
We build our organs with aircraft quality plywoods, select hardwoods, and state-of-the-art
bearing materials. John's design lends itself to stability and dependability, and our
improved materials assure years of trouble-free performance. For instance, we use
oil-impregnated bearings for the crank bearings, as opposed to the traditional oil-soaked
wooden bearing block.
Dependable, easy to carry, and flexible
John's design has three basic advantages. First, his design eliminates all of the complex
valves and action required by all other designs for street pipe organs. This means that we
can build an organ that is both dependable and less expensive than other
designs.
Second, his design uses a punched paper roll for its music. This is an
open standard, as opposed to a proprietary system, allowing greater availability of music
for the organs, and less chance of being left high and dry without a source of music.
If, for instance, only one or two people in the world produce a music format or module
required by your organ, we think that you should be concerned about the cost and continued
availability in the future. With the Smith roll standard, you have many sources for music,
including us. For information about our music rolls for the Smith organ, click here.
Third, the design is very light-weight. This isn't important if you're
buying an organ as a curiosity or an occasional weekend diversion, but if you intend to
troupe an organ with a show, the weight is very important indeed.
Decoration to fit your program or promotion
The outer case of the organ is hand-rubbed hardwood veneer. Our most popular finish for
the organ fronts is a red enamel, with gilt acanthus carvings, as shown below. Veneered
fronts are available as well, in cherry and walnut. For an extra charge, you can have the
case hand-painted.
